6 Things You Must Do Before Making a Big Move

It’s no secret that moving time can be extremely stressful. It feels as though you have a million things to do before the big day arrives. You have to hire movers, pack your belongings, and a number of other tasks. Use this list the next time you begin the stages of moving to help you get things done smoothly and with the least amount of stress possible.

1. Declutter Your Home

This step can be done weeks in advance before you need to move. Go through your home and remove all of the clutter. That pile of junk mail that’s been accumulating over the past ten years: throw it away. All of your kid’s old toys: find a place to donate them. 2. Plan a Garage Sale

Hopefully, after you declutter your home and set aside things that you don’t want to bring, you’ve significantly downgraded the amount of stuff you need to pack. The best thing to do with all of the stuff you don’t want is to have a garage sale. Not only will a garage sale help you get rid of all of your unwanted things but it could also put a little bit of money in your pocket.

3. Make the Necessary Phone Calls

You don’t want to wait until the last minute to transfer your electric and water to the new house. Inform the water and electric companies when you’ll be moving so you have lights in your new home when you’re ready to move in.

4. Make Arrangements for Your Children

If you have children and they’re switching school districts, make sure that you inform their old and new school of the changes.

5. Find and Hire a Moving Company

Make sure that you do plenty of research before you hire movers. Check their reviews and their prices. You don’t want to pay an arm and a leg but you also want to make sure that they’re competent. They are responsible for all of your belongings, after all.

6. Purchase Packing Supplies

Unless you’re hiring someone to pack up your home for you, you have a lot of work ahead of you. Buy the necessary items ahead of time so you’re not scrambling at the last minute to get it all done. Remember that you’ll need boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and permanent markers for labelling all of the boxes. Speaking of labelling, make sure that you mark the boxes as you go along. You don’t want to be going crazy because you can’t find something you need when you first get to your new home.

Moving doesn’t need to be an unbearably stressful process. Remember to be as organized as you can, get things done in steps, and keep in mind that lists are your friends. Just breathe and take it slow and everything will be just fine!
